    Are people missing the point of this documentary? The gentleman farming dates at the Liwa oasis at the beginning of the doc IS PART OF THE PROBLEM. He is part of a long proud tradition of depleting the water table by farming dates in the middle of the desert.
    These are unsustainable agricultural practices. The current 'solution' of simply drilling deeper wells eventually depletes the vast underground water source, to the point where now the water being drawn up is saline. They're actually now poisoning the soil by watering with saline water. Almost nothing can grow in the salinated soil they're creating.
    None of these agricultural practices are focused on ADDING to the natural environment. They're all focused on using up natural resources (like water) to make a profit, without sustainable practices to maintain & add to the natural resources. Eventually these oases will become complete desert because these farmers have used up all the fresh water underground. The desalination project at 37:00 isn't a solution--at great expense, it only further depletes the aquifer by using up even the salinated water at the very bottom of the aquifer.
    The 'man-made lake' with birds at 21:00 is actually LEAKAGE, if you listen closely. It's broken pipes or poorly sealed irrigation systems that are LEAKING vast amounts of precious water at the surface! It will evaporate so quickly under the heat & sun, so it's all being wasted. It's crazy that the video doesn't explore that issue.
    The hotel featured at the end (41:50) is simply drilling deeper & deeper into the aquifer & using up the precious water so people can have an 'exotic' luxury desert adventure.
    Not saying we're doing any better anywhere else in the world, but it's odd that the video doesn't challenge these practices at all, or highlight how they're destroying the last of these precious resources.

    They need more interplanting. Biome-appropriate, alley cropped trees, in rows shared with vines, and shrubs alternatjng with rows of annual and perennials will help conserve surface water. Soil is well protected and the soil biome creates optimal permeability and fertility. It reduces the need for pesticides, herbicides, irrigation, builds carbon and natural fertility, etc.
    Avoiding disturbing the soil thru plowing is important.
    Adding rainwater harvesting earthworks is important as well to quickly protect water from direct evaporation and to recharge aquifers instead of relying on "antique water."
    The other leg of better agricultural practices uses livestock to manage weeds, pests and additional fertility. They must avoid overgrazing as it exposes soil/dirt to solarization...
    Synthetic chemical inputs add a lot of salt, so relying on interplanting to enhance fertility instead is important.
    Desalination is limited, it requires ongoing energy and technical knowledge, outside materials to sustain it,
    It is best reserved as an occasional buffer.
    Greenhouses are a mirage regarding viability. They increase heat, they are still using synthetic chemical inputs and pumped water. Shading nets are a better option while plants establish.

    • @lauraw.7008
      @lauraw.7008 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@lauraw.7008
      Rainwater Harvesting earthworks are important as well. Soil surfaces become overly hard and impermeable to water, soil, life so opening the surface with frequent, small bunds, planting pits, swales, etc creates opportunity for water to infiltrate instead of being lost to direct evaporation or worse as erosive runoff.
      Bare ground loses permeability. Plowing contributes to the soil surface hardening and becoming dead. We need a multi-prong approach. A cocktail fork is too little...

      Instead of green houses for shade they should plant their cucumbers to climb on the palm trunks, and other crops below the palms as well. They should work with the dew, and make eggbox shape agroforestry and keep their soil covered with palm leaves and branches, crops, seeds and grasses, bushes and shrubs.

  • @behzadutube
    @behzadutube 5 месяцев назад +7

    So in summary, first they dried up their deep fresh waters hoping to green the desert, and that not only failed but in the process they also salinated and ruined their soil. Now they have dicovered green houses to grow tomatos, and are desalinating sea water for daily use, but since they have only 3 days of water reserve they had to store some disalinated water for emergency. I am struggling to see where exactly is the achievment or great success??

      This was my point too! The video doesn't really critique these unsustainable agricultural practices at all, & the comments are all about the 'good work' & 'proud traditions'. Proud tradition of destroying the environment without replenishing the natural resources, it seems.
      Not saying agricultural practices anywhere else are much better, but it's so odd to have soaring music & talk of 'proud traditions' & 'optimistic future' when the video is actually about mismanagement of dwindling resources. This video is a handbook on how to turn the last of the oases into more endless desert.

      It means you have never been to UAE when it gets cold between nov-mar first thing Emaraties and all khalijies do we head go the desert, our love to the desert is something many will never understand we are rooted to our past the lavish lifestyle didn't change us we are still humble prefer eating in the ground and share our food.. even the expats started to camp in the desert, we can see that they're enjoying it it too they can understand why we love our desert. Our great grand fathers lived in the desert in the hardest conditions, yet they shared water not only among themselves, but with their camels too knowing its rare to get water. Appreciating what God gave us and seeing the beauty in it even if it seems harsh to others, I believe it formed our solidarity and loyalty to our faith and culture.

    Havent u tried the pvc tubes which can go all around the palm trees and besides watering them all the time... The pvc water tubes with some wholes on the bottom could make the soil watering and the plam trees would have the water from their roots to leaves... Now... About the leaves getting greener... 2 times per day where the sun comes stronger water from above, so... Soil wet amd leaves refreshed 2 times per day, they will resist to our climate changes even MORE.
    Even drones, u gotta go with faster technology, can carry water and sprinkles it faster to all around the plantation.
